This institution has a physical Library. Visit Hochschule für Bildende Künste Dresden's Library

The Hochschule für Bildende Künste Dresden library, as a venerable scientific institution, plays an important role in meeting the diverse needs of education, research, study, and professional and personal development. Its significance stems from being one of the central and oldest components of the university.

The library's history dates back to 1768 when modest funds were allocated for purchasing books for the Architecture Department after the re-establishment of the Academy of Fine Arts. Notably, a significant acquisition occurred in 1814 when the library acquired the collection of Oberlandmeister Johann Gottlob Hauptmann. With the construction of a new academy building, the library found its place next to the Oktogon and began systematic acquisitions after 1830.

Tragically, during the bombing of Dresden in 1945, most of the art academy's library, which had grown to 12,000 volumes, was lost in flames, along with the old library rooms. In 1950, the merger of the Academy of Fine Arts and the University of Applied Arts into the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Dresden led to the consolidation of the libraries. The university library began its journey with a stock of 6,413 volumes.

Today, the HfBK library houses around 55,000 media and 112 journal titles, operating as a reference library. It offers its rich collection to university members and external visitors alike, with a thematic focus on the subjects of art history, media art, painting, graphics, sculpture, architecture, restoration, philosophy, costume design, and stage setting.

The library's inventory mainly consists of an open-access collection, encompassing exhibition catalogues, extensive dictionaries, and audio-visual media. The Media Centre, a non-public facility, serves as a valuable resource for faculty and students of the university, providing access to a collection focused on theater, film, fine arts, art technology, restoration, and art therapy. The Centre's inventory includes artist monographs, art documentation, recordings of performances, and documentation of various in-house projects, conferences, and courses.

The library's online catalogue, accessible both internally and externally, facilitates easy access to the subject-specific inventory.
