Established in 1919 and officially recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation and the U.S. Department of Education, the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) is a voluntary, peer-based, non-profit, regional accrediting association which accredits public and private universities and colleges in the states of New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland as well as the District of Columbia (now Washington, D.C.) and the American territories/commonwealths of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
