The People's Democratic Republic of Algeria is divided into 58 provinces (Arabic: wilayah) which are further subdivided into over 1,500 municipalities (Arabic: baladiyah). The larger number of higher education institutions meeting the uniRank selection criteria are located in the Algiers Province which is situated in the north of the country, hosts Algeria's capital Algiers and is the most densely populated province of Algeria, and also the smallest by area.
